THE BENDING CHAIR
Prompted to make a physical product that utilizes digital fabrication, my goal was to make a lounge chair with comfort. I’ve always appreciated the angles and heights of an adirondack chair, but always hated the rigidity of the material. Thus, the bending chair was conceived with a back that would curve to the shape of a user’s back. I used the typical dimensions of an adirondack chair, but then took the wooden back and kerfed it. Kerfing was an effective method for changing the properties of a stiff material, and I did many tests to figure out which dimensions would work best. The chair is minimal, making the back of the chair the focus of all attention. Its pieces are designed to be cut with a CNC router, and as a result it is comprised of flat pieces that make the chair easy to take apart and pack away.
